SOFTBILLS - Toucans and Aracaris - Ivory Billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara)
Ivory Billed Aracari
Ivory Billed Aracari

The Ivory Bill Aracari (Pteroglossus azara) is one of the smallest of all toucans at approximately 140 grams in weight - perhaps tied with the Green Aracari for smallest, though the Ivory Bill has a longer bill. There are two subspecies of the Ivory Bill, one found primarily in Brazil and the other in Peru, though there is some overlap. Both subspecies have only recently been bred in captivity in the U.S., the dominate form at Dallas World Aquarium in 2006 and the other at Emerald Forest Bird Gardens also in 2006. Ivory Bills are dimorphic. The male has a black crown, which the female lacks. They lay 3-4 elliptical white eggs in a small tree cavity or hollow log in captivity. They are not listed on CITES.
